 Soumya Gupta

Consul General of India, Hamburg

Soumya Gupta is a career diplomat and a member of the prestigious Indian Foreign Service (IFS) since 2013. She has represented India’s interests, serving in various capacities both in India and abroad.

Before joining her current assignment as Consul General of India in Hamburg, Soumya served in the Administration Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi as Deputy Secretary (FSP & Cadre). Prior to that, she served as Under Secretary in the Economic Diplomacy Division and in the Central Europe Division of the Ministry.

Soumya headed the Economic and Commercial Wing at the Embassy of India, Berlin from 2015-19 and was actively involved in expanding the Indo-German bilateral economic ties across its full spectrum.

Before joining the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Soumya worked in the financial sector as an investment banker in London, and as an M&A specialist with the Big 4 in India. Additionally, she has experience in the academia and policy advocacy from her stints at the London School of Economics (LSE) and at an International NGO.

Soumya has a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi and MSc. in Economics from the London School of Economics (LSE).

Soumya is a German speaker and has a keen interest in writing, travelling, gastronomy and yoga. Her debut book, Mad(e) in India, is a bestseller about Indians, a heartfelt introspection on Indianness and a primer for people interested in learning more about India.
